What To Expect If Democrats Win The House And/Or Senate

The midterm elections give U.S. citizens the chance to voice their feelings about a President halfway through his term. In fact, today’s elections will likely determine how the remaining two years of Donald Trump's presidency will pan out.

So far, we've been seeing a close-run race between the President’s party (Republicans) and the Democrats.

What will happen if the Democrats win the House?

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for election in the midterms, with a majority of 218 needed for either side to win.

Currently, the Democrats have an 88 percent chance of winning control of the House. That's according to averages calculated by numerous polling outlets.

If the Dems were to win control of the house, any bills passed by the President would have to be approved by them - so they achieve more control in Congress.

The Democrats achieving a win in the House would also show a lack of faith in Trump.

What will happen if the Democrats win the Senate?

A total of 33 seats are up for election in the Senate, with two more contested in special elections.

The chances for the Democrats to achieve a win in the Senate are significantly lower than that of the House. Specifically, Dems have a 19.5 percent chance of winning control.

Those in power in the Senate can approve or disapprove of the President’s choice of federal judges and Supreme Court nominees. They also have the power to decide on major presidential appointments as well as overseeing any impeachment proceedings.

What will happen if the Democrats win the Senate and the House?

If Democrats happen to seize control of both the House and Senate, this would show a huge rejection of Donald Trump as President and the Republicans who support him nationwide.

It would be a huge win for Democrats, as they would be able to alter Trump's agenda and begin to investigate his administration, something the Republican Party has not done very much of.

The President would be faced with the choice of moderating and working with Democrats or being a lame-duck President.

A lame-duck President is when after a successor has been elected, the outgoing president and president-elect usually embark on a transition of power.

This would start in January 2019 when a new Democratic Congress would be sworn in.
