Boca Raton believes it might have found a way to avoid a repeat of what happened two years ago.
The city is looking into using eminent domain to block development on its beaches. That would allow city officials to buy privately owned beachfront property and keep it from being developed.
The city started looking at ways to preserve the beaches after plans for a four-story house on the beach were approved two years ago. The idea of eminent domain is being considered as an option for the Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District. It’s eyeing properties along North Ocean Boulevard, which doubles as the city’s stretch of State Road A1A.
The chair of the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District tells the Sun-Sentinel the land could be turned into parks.
The district still has to get appraisals for the properties to determine how much it would pay for the them if commissioners were to proceed with eminent domain.
