Over-Qualified Employees Experience More Stress, FAU Study Says

Being over-qualified for your job can be quite boring, sure, but a new study reveals it's also stressful and detrimental to your well being.

Florida Atlantic University researchers analyzed 25 years of research and say workers who are over-qualified for their jobs are more likely to become stressed, frustrated, and uncommitted to organization.

Over-qualified workers were also found to be more likely to engage in deviant behaviors, such as coming in late or leaving early, theft, and bullying fellow workers.

Perceived over-qualification occurs when an employee is expecting a job that utilizes their qualifications but does not find themselves in such a position, leaving them feeling essentially deprived.

The more over-qualified an employee feels, the more likely they are to engage in counterproductive behaviors, researchers say.

Throughout the study, younger, over-educated and narcissistic employees tended to report higher levels of perceived over-qualification.
