Judge Sides With Gov. Scott in Cop-Killer Case

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - An Orlando judge sides with Gov. Scott over the local State Attorney on the issue of who will prosecute accused cop-killer Markeith Loyd and has denied a request to delay the proceedings.

The judge rejected State Attorney Aramis Ayala's request to be reinstated on the case. Ayala said earlier this month that she wouldn't seek the death penalty for a man charged in the December slayings of his ex-girlfriend and a police officer.

Gov. Scott removed her after she announced she wouldn't seek the death penalty against Loyd or any other homicide cases that reach her office.

Ayala says the governor overstepped his authority and she is fighting to keep the case.

Ayala says there is no evidence that shows the death penalty improves public safety. She says it's costly and drags on for years for the victims' families. Another hearing in the case is scheduled for Monday.
