Former UM, Dillard High Football Star Dead at 38

Former Dillard High and Univ. of Miami standout and cornerback, Leonard Myers, died Friday after a battle with cancer.

Myers was a standout football player at Dillard before being recruited by some of the nation's top NCAA football programs including Florida State, Auburn, Florida, and Michigan. He eventually signed with UM and went on to total 132 tackles, 35 pass break-ups and 9 interceptions before his 2001 recruitment with the New England Patriots.

After 15 games with New England, and a Super Bowl ring with the Patriots in 2002, Myers went on to play briefly each with the Detroit Lions, New York Jets and New Orleans Saints.

Several former UM Hurricanes teammates and affiliates, including cornerback coach Mike Rumph, took to social media to pay tribute to their former teammate, whose death was confirmed later by Miami.

Myers played a significant role in rebuilding the Hurricanes football program ahead of Miami's 2001 national championship.

In recent years, Myers had been considering a coaching position with NFLPA's Coaching Internship Program, which placed him at New Mexico Highlands University.
